When you write for anything digital, you have to be clear, concise and compelling. In today’s fast-paced world, where users are generally time-poor but incredibly task-focussed, you need to get your message across immediately. Every word, every sentence must fight for its life; must justify its inclusion on the screen.
And the grammar of the web is search engine optimisation (SEO). Applying clear, concise messaging in a scannable format ensures your digital content stands the best chance of being found, understood and where relevant, actionable.
These are just some of the rules of writing for the web that will help you apply a framework for better conveying information online. How does your web content stack up?
I’ve been writing for the web for almost two decades. I’ve consulted to many corporate, government, SME and individual clients on the value that specialist writers can bring to digital content. This could cover a range of disciplines:
- Search engine optimisation
- Content marketing and copywriting
- Content design and strategy
- Instructional design
- UX and technical writing.
In addition to the regular contracting or freelance content work, I also conduct a digital writing course at the Australian Writers’ Centre in Sydney.
